What Procedures Does a Mommy Makeover Include?

Mommy makeover is really an umbrella term for a combination of different surgical procedures aimed at addressing the changes that pregnancy causes in your body. Not all patients will respond to pregnancy and childbirth in the same way, which is why your combination of procedures may look different than someone else’s.

Three of the procedures most commonly included in a mommy makeover include tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), breast lift (mastopexy) and liposuction.

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

As any mother knows from experience, the soft tissue of your abdomen is stretched beyond its natural limit during pregnancy and childbirth. Even women who return to their pre-pregnancy weight with diligent post-partum diet and exercise end up with loose, sagging skin around their midsection or a stubborn “pooch” that refuses to go away.

This is where a tummy tuck comes in. During this procedure, Dr. Compoginis removes the excess skin and tightens separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti, a common occurrence among pregnant mothers) to create a flatter, smoother stomach profile. The procedure involves making an incision along the lower abdomen, through which soft tissue is repaired and repositioned. Typically, Dr. Compoginis will conceal the incision beneath the underwear line to be as inconspicuous as possible.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding mothers alike often have to contend with drooping breasts and stretched tissue after giving birth. A breast lift restores a more youthful breast position by removing excess skin and reshaping the remaining tissue. Typically, the areola is raised to a more natural position while breast contours are redefined for a perkier appearance.

Many women find that combining their lift with breast augmentation is the best way to compensate for lost volume, while others find that a lift by itself is enough to achieve amazing results. Dr. Compoginis will weigh each option and discuss with you according to the details of your unique case.

Liposuction

Some pregnancy-related fat deposits can resist even more aggressive diet and exercise efforts. If you’re feeling discouraged by a lack of progress, liposuction can help redefine contours around your abdomen, flanks, thighs, back or arms for a more proportional aesthetic.

In this procedure, Dr. Compoginis will use thin tubes called cannulas to precisely target and extract fat cells without affecting surrounding tissues. For a more comprehensive option, Lipo 360 treats the entire torso at once. The combination of liposuction with a tummy tuck creates a dramatic, yet still harmonious result that smooths transitions between different treatment areas while addressing excess skin and fat.

Am I a Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

If you meet the following criteria, you may be an ideal candidate for a mommy makeover:

  • You plan on not having any more children
  • You are not breastfeeding
  • You have good skin elasticity
  • You are at or near your goal weight and can consistently maintain this weight
  • You are a non-smoker (or willing to quit) and in good overall health
  • You have realistic expectations of the results that a mommy makeover can provide

Certain conditions may affect your eligibility for a mommy makeover, including bleeding disorders. Dr. Compoginis will discuss your eligibility with you in greater detail as part of the consultation process.

The Mommy Makeover Treatment Process

Initial Consultation

Every mommy makeover we perform is carefully tailored to each patient, which requires a thorough consultation. In this initial appointment, Dr. Compoginis will carefully and comprehensively review your aesthetic concerns, medical history, expectations of treatment and more. Then, he will formulate an approach and clearly explain all steps of the process to you. This is your time to raise any questions or concerns you may have.

Preparing for Surgery

We will provide you with all the information and instructions you need to set yourself up for a successful procedure. For example, you may be advised to adjust certain medications you’re taking, have transportation arranged and fast for a set window of time before your procedure.

The Procedure

Mommy makeovers are typically done with general anesthesia. Depending on which procedures are included in your case, the entire treatment can take between four and six hours. When and where incisions are made also depend on which procedures are included.

After making the carefully planned incisions around your lower abdomen (for tummy tuck) and/or breast area (breast lift), Dr. Compoginis will remove excess skin, repair separated muscles and reposition tissue as appropriate. After all the work is completed, Dr. Compoginis will suture incisions closed and apply compression garments to support the healing process.

Recovery and Aftercare

During your first week of recovery, swelling, bruising and soreness are expected. Prescription pain medications can manage discomfort, which should steadily decrease after peaking within the first several days. You will be advised to wear compression garments and specialized bras as applicable to support the healing process, and you may have surgical drains placed.

Most patients take two to three weeks off work, though those with desk jobs may be able to return earlier. More intense physical activities like heavy lifting or running are to be avoided for a period of six to eight weeks, depending on progress.

Over the next several months, your results will be revealed as swelling gradually declines. Incisions will fade, and your tissues will fully settle into their new position. While fat cells removed during liposuction won’t return, maintaining your goal weight is still vital after a mommy makeover because weight gain can still affect treated areas.

Frequently Asked Questions

K
L
How long should I wait after pregnancy to have a mommy makeover?
You should wait at least six months after delivery and, if breastfeeding, several months after fully weaning. This allows your hormonal profile to stabilize, along with your weight.
K
L
Can I have more children after a mommy makeover?
A mommy makeover will not affect your safety (nor the baby’s safety) if you become pregnant later on. However, pregnancy and childbirth can still significantly affect your mommy makeover results, from causing muscles to separate once again to affecting breast tissue and more.
K
L
Will I have visible scars?
All surgical procedures create scars, but Dr. Compoginis strategically places incisions where they can be concealed by underwear, swimwear or natural body creases. Scars fade significantly over time, typically becoming much less noticeable within a year.

How long do mommy makeover results last?
Results can last for many years with proper maintenance. Tummy tuck muscle repair is permanent unless another pregnancy occurs. Depending on your age at the time of the procedure(s), breast lift results can last ten to fifteen years before natural aging causes some recurrent sagging. Liposuction permanently removes fat cells from treated areas, but as mentioned, maintaining a stable weight is still essential for protecting your results.

Can I combine other procedures with my mommy makeover?
Many women add procedures like arm lifts, thigh lifts or labiaplasty to address additional concerns. Dr. Compoginis will discuss safe combination options during consultation.
