About Liposuction and Lipo 360

Liposuction removes unwanted fat deposits from specifically targeted areas of the body through small incisions and specialized surgical instruments. This procedure is not a weight loss or bariatric surgery, but rather, an effective way to address exercise and diet-resistant fat deposits for smoother and more proportional body contours.

Traditional Liposuction

In traditional liposuction, fat cells in problem areas commonly located along the abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms or back are extracted while surrounding tissues are preserved. This is done with a fine tube, or cannula, and there are several techniques (such as manually moving the tube or using various forms of energy) that surgeons use to break up the fat cells prior to extracting them.

Lipo 360: More Comprehensive Approach

Lipo 360 takes a comprehensive approach to body contouring surgery by addressing the entire midsection in one session. This technique treats the abdomen, flanks, lower back, and sometimes the upper back in a single procedure.

By contouring the full circumference of your torso, Lipo 360 creates a more cohesive and harmonious result that allows for improved definition from every angle. You’ll notice improved waistline definition, smoother transitions between treated areas, and a more athletic overall appearance.

Am I a Candidate for Liposuction?

Ideal candidates for liposuction are within 30 pounds of their goal weight and have good skin elasticity. You should be in excellent overall health, maintain a stable weight, and have realistic expectations about what body contouring can achieve. Liposuction works best for people who already follow a healthy diet and exercise routine but struggle with isolated fat deposits that don’t seem to budge.

Strong candidates also have firm, elastic skin that can conform to new body contours after fat removal. If your skin has lost significant elasticity due to aging, pregnancy, or major weight loss, Dr. Compoginis may recommend combining liposuction with skin tightening procedures.

Liposuction may not be suitable if you have certain medical conditions, active infections, poor circulation, or bleeding disorders. Smokers must quit several weeks before surgery, as tobacco use impairs healing and increases complication risks. Women planning future pregnancies should consider postponing abdominal liposuction, as pregnancy can alter results. During your consultation, Dr. Compoginis will review your medical history and examine areas of concern to determine whether liposuction aligns with your goals.

The Treatment Process

Consultation and Planning

The first step in your liposuction treatment plan with our double board-certified surgeon, Dr. John M. Compoginis, is a comprehensive consultation. Dr. Compoginis will carefully assess your anatomy, discuss your vision and expectations of treatment, evaluate your health status and medical history, and formulate an informed strategy that incorporates these findings. He will discuss his approach with you and mark treatment areas so that you can be confidently prepared for your procedure.

Prep and Anesthesia

On the day of your surgery, you’ll receive either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on the extent of your procedure. Lipo 360 typically requires general anesthesia due to the larger treatment area.

Incisions and Fat Removal

Once you’re comfortably positioned and ready for the procedure, Dr. Compoginis will strategically create tiny incisions, concealing them in natural body creases whenever possible. He will then inject tumescent solution into treatment areas, which is a mixture of saline, lidocaine, and epinephrine that numbs tissues, constricts blood vessels, and makes fat easier to remove while minimizing bruising.

Using thin, hollow tubes called cannulas, Dr. Compoginis carefully breaks up and extracts fat deposits via suction. He moves the cannula in controlled patterns, sculpting each area with precision. Advanced techniques allow him to remove a significant amount of fat while maintaining smooth, even results. For Lipo 360, he works methodically around your entire midsection, creating effortlessly smooth transitions between treated areas.

The procedure typically takes two to four hours, though more complex cases may need additional time. After removing the desired amount of fat, Dr. Compoginis closes incisions with sutures and applies compression garments to support the healing process and minimize swelling.

Recovery and Aftercare

Expect swelling, bruising, and soreness during the first week following surgery. Post-operative discomfort is typically well-managed with prescription pain medication. You’ll wear compression garments for several weeks to minimize swelling, support healing tissues, and help the skin adapt to new body contours.

Most patients return to desk work within five to seven days, though physical jobs may require two weeks off. Avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and vigorous activities for four to six weeks. Light walking is encouraged immediately after surgery to promote circulation and reduce blood clot risk.

Swelling gradually subsides over several months. While you’ll notice improvement within weeks, final results emerge after three to six months once all swelling resolves and tissues settle into their new shape.

It’s imperative that you maintain a stable weight after liposuction surgery to preserve your new contours. While removed fat cells won’t return, remaining cells can enlarge if you gain significant weight. Staying active and eating well protects your investment in body contouring.

How much fat can be safely removed during liposuction?
Safety guidelines typically limit fat removal to about five liters per session, though individual circumstances vary. During consultation, Dr. Compoginis assesses your anatomy and discusses realistic expectations for fat removal based on your body and health profile.

Can liposuction treat cellulite?
Liposuction removes deep fat deposits but doesn't address cellulite, which results from structural issues in the skin's surface layers. In some cases, liposuction may temporarily improve cellulite appearance, but it's not designed as a cellulite treatment. Dr. Compoginis can recommend alternative treatments specifically targeting cellulite during your consultation.

What's the difference between traditional liposuction and Lipo 360?
